Irmo Real Estate

The town of Irmo, SC is located off the shores of Lake Murray and about 10 miles from downtown Columbia, the capital city of South Carolina.  Currently, this suburban town has approximately 12,000 residents and was considered by Money Magazine in 2007 as the 12th “Most Affordable Place to live in the Country”. Irmo originated because of the railroads of Columbia, Newberry and Laurens as it is the high ridge between rivers and was officially incorporated in 1890. The town’s name comes from the first two letters of the last names of two influential railroad men- C.J.Iredell and H.C. Moseley. Often considered “The gateway to Lake Murray”, Irmo is a recreational paradise to residents.  There are endless possibilities of activities residents can enjoy on the Lake Murray, including hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, hiking, and such much more. A variety of shopping is available, ranging from small town shops to nationally recognized chains. The Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Center is a great reference for information for newcomers and visitors.

Irmo is also famous for its Okra Strut festival which has been named one of “The Best 10 Festivals in the Southeast”.  It has been held every year since 1973 at the end of September.  The festival originally started to fund the public library, but now all proceeds return to the community to benefit civic and school organizations.  The lively festival includes a parade, live music, arts and crafts displays, and a great time for all! Residents also attend the award-winning District 5 of Lexington and Richland Counties Schools.
